How to jump start your car in 9 steps

Starting the car is a simple process that can get you back on the road quickly when your car battery dies. Here are the steps to start your car:

1) Park the car with the dead battery next to a car with a charged battery. Make sure the two cars are close enough that jumper wires can reach from one car's battery to the other.

2) Turn off both vehicles and make sure both vehicles are in "Park" or "Neutral" with the parking brake engaged.

3) Open the hood of both cars and locate the batteries. If the car's battery is hidden, please follow the owner's manual to locate it.

4) Identify the positive and negative terminals of both batteries. The positive terminal is marked with "+" sign and other terminal (Negative) is marked with "-" sign.

5) Attach the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.

6) Attach the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the charged battery.

7) Attach the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the charged battery.

8) Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block or another metal part of the car with the dead battery. Do not attach the cable to the negative terminal of the dead battery.

9) Start the vehicle with a properly charged battery. Then keep the car running for a few minutes. Then try starting the car with a dead battery. If it doesn't start the car, wait a few minutes and then try again. Once the car with the dead battery is started, remove the wires in the reverse order you connected them, being careful not to let the ends of the wires touch together.
